A Nigerian House of Representative member, Honourable Linda Chuba Ikpeazu who is also one of the Nigerian delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament has informed Parliamentarians from other West African Countries that Nigeria is still very much in control of its country.
Responding to concerns raised after the Nigerian delegations presented her country report at the First Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament, meeting in Abuja, Hon. Linda said that though the country is being faced with insecurity challenges, the country is still very much strong and steadfast to solving its’ challenges.
“In the sub region there are security challenges in various countries, it depends on the degree. All you need to do is go to google and you will get the true status of the security situations in other countries;
“It is important to know that Nigeria remains a stable country and it is relatively peaceful, if it weren’t we won’t even be here sitting, but we do have some security challenges, and it is not peculiar to Nigeria.
“Unfortunately right now, we are dealing with insecurity but Nigeria as a country we are determined to solve it;
“Some questions were asked and suggestions were made that maybe ECOWAS can come in, well we are not too big to get help from any one, but I am not the Executive I cannot speak to that, but what I can tell you is what has been going on” Linda said.
While disclosing measures taken by the country to address the rising insecurity threat in the country, Honourable said “the House of Representatives convened a special security summit last week, and the decisions from that summit are being collated at the moment, and it is the understanding with Mr. President that those suggestions or outcome from that meeting are implemented to the latter, so we are still waiting for that;
“Currently, the National Assembly is in the process of amending the 1999 constitution, now don’t forget that there are various reasons that can contribute to insecurity in any country, and like I said earlier, it is not peculiar to Nigeria;
“If you have Bad governance, if you have a situation where people feel excluded, if there is poverty and human right abuse, these are so many reasons why insecurity can happen in a country;
“what we are doing right now is trying to hold public hearings in the various zones of the country to get suggestions from the Nigerian as to the best way to actually govern this country, we are doing that right now, and what that will eventually do is get the views of the Nigerian people, once they have this feelings of inclusiveness it goes a long way towards addressing the insecurity” Linda said.
Concluding she added “Our Army, the police, everyone is working right now to make the place better. So the fact that there is insecurity right now doesn’t mean that Nigeria as a country has lost control, Nigeria have not lost control of the country. All we are saying right now is that, this is the situation but we are working towards addressing it, both using kinetic method and non-kinetic methods, that’s what we are doing right now, and I am very happy that my brothers and sisters here are concerned, so I will like to say thank you very much, we are working very hard to make sure that we address our security situation.
The vice President of Liberia has challenged the ECOWAS Parliament to push for appropriate implementation of the community protocol on gender and human equality across regional and local governments. Vice President Jewel Taylor made this request while concluding her keynote address presented before the Plenary at the official opening of the First Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament seating in Abuja. Jewel stated that Gender equality is a fundamental human right, yet women are underrepresented in power and decision making roles, women around the region do not fully experience equal rights and their potential as economic, social and sustainable change-agents remains untapped. She said “Excellency, special guest, distinguish members of the ECOWAS Parliament, as I close, permit me to say I will be remiss if I remain silent at this august gathering of regional leaders about the perennial issue of the lack of gender inequality in our local and regional body politics; ...
